Holiday Weight Management

Dr. David Regnier
Family Medicine

What does the term “holiday feasting season” mean?
Holiday feasting season is the seemingly endless time of temptation that begins with Halloween candy and continues with holiday events and dinners. For those not wanting to increase their waistline, this time of year can be difficult if you are not prepared.

How much weight is typically gained during the holiday season?
We typically have three to four months of constant feasting to battle over the holiday season. If we eat without control, we set ourselves up for bad eating patterns, ill health, and weight gain. Americans tend to gain 1 to 10 pounds during the end-of-the-year festivities. This can be a tough time for anyone trying to eat healthy.

How can we make it through the holiday season without gaining weight?
Holiday weight management is a challenge, but can be done with a little preparation. Here are some tips that can help you make it through this holiday season.

  • Set a goal of trying to maintain your present weight instead of dieting.
  • Pace yourself when eating.
  • Choose your beverages carefully. Alcohol is packed with calories.
  • Bring a low-calorie dish with you to a dinner or event.
  • Make an effort to continue a regular exercise program.
  • Don’t go to an event on an empty stomach.
  • Drink lots of water to fill your stomach prior to eating.
  • Don’t let a hectic schedule force you to eat fast food. Prepare meals in advance and freeze them instead.

Ready or not, the holiday feasting season is here. Remember that maintaining your weight is not impossible during the holiday season. With a little preparation, you can continue down the road to good health.
