Why is childhood obesity an important topic?
One in every five children in the US is overweight. Overweight children are more likely to develop high blood pressure and cholesterol, diabetes, low self-esteem and depression.
What contributes to childhood obesity?
Lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating patterns and genetics contribute to obesity. Many children are inactive during the day due to decreased physical activity in schools and increased screen time.
How can I help my family? It is important not to single out only the overweight members of the family. Following a healthy lifestyle is beneficial for the entire family.
- Reduce screen time and increase exercise.
- Start planning family activities such as walking, hiking, riding bikes and playing ball.
- Encourage your child’s school to offer regular physical activity classes.
- Meals should include more vegetables and fruits and healthy snacks. Avoid foods that are high in sugar and fat. Limit the amount of sweetened beverages and replace whole milk with skim milk.
- Instead of frying, bake or broil. Also, respect your child’s appetite by not forcing them to finish all food if they are not hungry.
Including family members in the meal planning and activity choices makes it enjoyable. Good modeling helps children to understand the importance of caring for themselves and staying healthy for a lifetime.
